Interlibrary Loan Policy

A. Shawnee Library System and Other Libraries

Purpose

The Stinson Memorial Library District is committed to participating in interlibrary loan, both as a lender and a borrower. Interlibrary loan does not relieve a local library of the responsibility to develop its own collection, but rather serves as a means of over-coming the information limits inherent in a given collection.

Acceptable Requests

Channels for interlibrary loan transactions at the Stinson Memorial Library District shall be ALA or other written requests from libraries or agencies.

Requests from individuals not associated with a library or other agency will be returned and re-directed through the individual's local library.

Materials That May Be Borrowed

Interlibrary loan will be offered to patrons whenever the staff determines that it is the appropriate solution to the patron's information needs.

In general, the following will not be requested:

Duplicate titles already owned unless it has been determined that the Stinson Memorial Library District's copy is missing.

Stinson Memorial Library District agrees to reimburse lending institutions for materials lost or damaged by out patrons, regardless of whether said charges are recovered from the patron.

Materials That May Be Loaned

Stinson Memorial Library District will strive to fill interlibrary loan requests whenever possible except for the following:

Rare, bulky or fragile items which are difficult to ship. Special arrangements must be made.
Materials on reserve or known to be in constant demand at Stinson Memorial Library District.
B. Online Search All online reference searches are done at the discretion of the Library Director who will decide whether an online search is the best method of solving a particular reference problem. Before an online database search is conducted, all other relevant sources will be examined.
Appointments for this service are advisable since searches will be conducted after regular library hours. If the search is particularly difficult, an individual may have to wait at least 48 hours before the search is completed.

All fees for searches must be paid as soon as the search is completed. The fee charged will reflect the telecommunication charges plus staff and processing. Patron will determine the dollar limit of the search.

Personal checks as well as cash will be accepted as payments for the search.
