“I have a great sincere esteem and regard for you both, and ardently wish that some line could be marked out by which both (of) you could walk.” This is a quote from our first president, George Washington, as he explained to his secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson, and secretary of treasury, Alexander Hamilton, that he wished for them to compromise. With Jefferson being a democratic-republican and Hamilton a Federalist, this naturally never happened. This polarization has continued throughout history and is presently causing our nation’s citizens to focus their vote on the opposing candidate’s party. This is a negative effect; the voters should be concentrating on the aspirant’s views on the issues of our country.
Polarization is a major factor because of political parties. As a result of this, the country’s population is being severed into sections. Even our maps are color-coded in a brick red and cerulean blue. As you know, these colors are two thirds of the colors on our nation’s flag. So what happens to the color white? There are many parties to which many people belong. Many belong to the blue-represented Democrats and the red-represented Republicans. Many belong to smaller groups. The red and blue groups dominate these organizations. Yet, some voters are torn between the two, and some agree with neither. You could refer to these citizens as the ‘white party’. This party consists of a variety of opinions that are not strongly portrayed. If political parties were eliminated, voters could voice their opinions and represent themselves. Though we are not entirely segregated, we are certainly headed in that direction.
During the election period in our nations, voters’ opinions seem to dwell on the emotions of the candidates. Civilians show favoritism toward their party. Americans become stubborn and concur with the beliefs of their party no matter how preposterous they really are. The candidates start mud slinging and insulting each other at every opportunity. Not only is this arrogant and immature, but it sets and immoral example for today’s youth. There is enough poor conduct in the world as it is. Citizens should read beyond the candidate’s cover and search the pages for their conviction.
The quote spoken by George Washington abridges the harms political parties have on the occupants of our country. Mud slinging and polarization are not admirable leadership qualities. We need to draw our attention to the candidate’s ideas and strengths, not his or her party. If we refuse, the entire United States could divide. Next time you go to the polls, please think carefully about the names printed on your ballot. Ask yourself how these people represent your thoughts. Think wisely, your vote could change the course of our country.
